Homestays & Villas Landing Page Revamp
MAKEMYTRIP
The landing page experience did not effectively support browsing, discovery, or inspiration, leading to underutilisation of the funnel's full potential. This project focused on reimagining the 'Homestays & Villas' landing page to improve discoverability, engagement, and downstream conversion—without disrupting the core search-led booking behaviour.

Homestays & Villas UX
CHALLENGE
The Homestays & Villas landing page was heavily search-led, limiting discovery for users who were still exploring destinations, property types, or travel intent. Content below the search widget saw low engagement, and the page failed to highlight the funnel's strongest value propositions such as entire properties, group-friendly stays, and curated experiences.

As a result:
-
Users exited early without browsing
-
High-intent segments (groups & families) were under-leveraged
-
The landing page acted as a gateway, not a discovery experience
OUTCOME
Redesigned the Homestays landing page to support inspiration-led browsing, clearer information hierarchy, and curated discovery without disrupting existing search behavior. The new experience encouraged exploration, surfaced high-value inventory, and guided users naturally from browsing to booking.

This shift improved both user engagement and booking quality, especially for entire-property and group stays.

The Transformation ✨

Objective
Enable inspiration-led discovery
Shift the landing page from being purely search-driven to exploratory browsing
Improve content discoverability
Surface curated collections and category strengths beyond the search widget
Highlight high-intent use cases
Bring focus to group travel, entire properties, and longer stays early in the journey
Drive quality traffic downstream
Increase engagement that translates into stronger listing visits and conversions
Research & Insights
We analysed landing page behaviour, scroll depth, and downstream funnel data to understand how users were engaging:
Search dominated behaviour
A majority of users interacted only with the search widget, with limited engagement beyond the first fold.
3% decrease in Landing to Listing
Inspiration gap for users
Users with flexible dates or destinations lacked cues to browse, leading to early exits instead of exploration.
Discovery led flow was limited
Large visuals pushed critical conversion elements below the fold, making it harder for users to interact with

~30% decrease in visit share for segments below search widget after 1st page scroll
These insights highlighted that the opportunity wasn’t demand generation, but better discovery and intent shaping on the homepage
Current UI

User Mindset Framing
Our users arrive in very different mindsets but the current landing page treats them the same:
New Users
Want inspiration but gets confused due to no clarity
-
Lacks category-led discovery
-
Unclear understanding on Alt Acco offerings
Returning Users
Want quick access, but are forced to start over
-
Lack of personal history, last booked property, autofilled filters
-
Personalisation
Explorers
Want to browse themes, but can’t find them easily
-
Under-prioritised collections
-
Lack of chains, no property showcase
Design Themes

Improve Discoverability
Enable exploration for new and undecided users by surfacing curated collections, destinations, and property types—making it easier to browse before committing to search.

Provide Education
Help users understand how Homestays & Villas differ from Hotels by clearly communicating key value propositions such as space, privacy, group suitability, and unique stay experiences.

Improve UX of current flow
Refine high-impact sections like collections, awards to reduce friction, improve visual hierarchy, and support smoother discovery journeys.
Competitive Study

Problem & Vision
Explorability without effort through personalised collections
Context Recognition (groups vs couple vs solo etc)
The experience lacked clear discovery paths and intent cues, making it difficult for users to browse meaningfully, understand value differences, and move forward without committing to search early.
Visual Explorations, top rated properties resulting in better trust
Convert broad, implicit user intents into defined collections
Differentiate funnel offerings (space, privacy)

My learnings and takeaway

Discovery quality directly shapes intent quality
Search-first entry points can limit exploration, while guided discovery helps users form clearer intent before committing.

This project taught me that how users enter a journey often matters more than what they search for.

Implicit intent is often stronger than declared intent
Users rarely articulate their needs upfront, but behavioural signals & context can be leveraged to guide decisions without additional inputs.
This project taught me to design confidently for undecided users.

Strong outcomes come from cross-functional alignment
Working through differing product, supply, business & developer perspectives strengthened my ability to anchor decisions in user data and impact.
This taught me how to synthesise feedback, handle disagreements constructively, and anchor decisions back to user impact.

I got the Super Tripper award for showing exceptional capabilities in the quarter :)
